Artist Statement
The work is a comment on the hopes and dreams of settlers and immigrants’ looking for both recreation and the promise of a ‘better life’, their love of sport and a race that ‘stops a nation’.
Having emigrated from the UK in ’95 and lived in Melbourne for ten years, I am struck with Melburnians embracing every form of sport, both team and individual.
I like the idea that you clear an area of hard earned land not to grow crops or build a house but turn it into a place where you could risk everything. Is this part of the fabric of ‘the lucky country’ a land of great opportunity?
Hopes and Dreams; the lucky country.
